Tanzania Weather

Tanzania’s weather varies by region, but it generally follows a pattern of dry and rainy seasons influenced by its tropical climate. Here’s a month-by-month breakdown to help you plan your travels:

🌤 January:
This is the heart of the short dry season. The weather is warm and sunny, especially in the north and central regions. It’s a great time for safaris, particularly in the southern Serengeti where the wildebeest calving season begins. Coastal areas like Zanzibar are hot and humid, perfect for a beach holiday.

🌦 February:
Similar to January, February is still dry and warm across most of the country. It’s ideal for wildlife viewing and photography, especially with the wildebeest calving continuing in full swing. Kilimanjaro climbing is also good during this month with relatively stable weather.

🌧 March:
This month marks the start of the long rainy season, especially by mid-March. Northern parks may still be accessible early in the month, but rainfall increases steadily. Landscapes become lush and green, which is beautiful, but some roads may begin to get muddy and challenging.

🌧 April:
April is typically the wettest month in Tanzania. Heavy rains can make travel difficult, especially in remote safari areas. Many lodges close for maintenance, and game drives can be limited. However, this is a good time for budget travelers, as prices drop and tourist numbers are low.

🌧 May:
The long rains continue into May, although they begin to taper off toward the end of the month. The scenery is vibrant and green, making it a great time for birdwatching. Safari may still be tricky in some regions, but it’s a peaceful and quiet time to explore.

☀️ June:
June signals the beginning of the dry season. The rains have cleared, and the weather is cooler and more comfortable, especially in the highlands. Wildlife becomes easier to spot as animals start gathering around water sources. It’s also the start of the high season for tourism.

☀️ July:
Dry, sunny, and cool—July is one of the best months to visit. The Great Migration moves toward the northern Serengeti, and game viewing is fantastic across the country. It’s a popular month for Kilimanjaro climbs and beach holidays on Zanzibar.

☀️ August:
August continues the trend of excellent weather—cool mornings, warm days, and almost no rain. It’s peak safari season with amazing wildlife sightings, especially in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Book early as it’s one of the busiest months for travel in Tanzania.

☀️ September:
Still dry and warm, September is great for safari, especially for catching the dramatic Mara River crossings during the Great Migration. It’s also a good time to visit Zanzibar before the short rains begin.

🌤 October:
October is the tail end of the long dry season. The weather starts to warm up, and you might experience a few scattered showers toward the end of the month. Wildlife viewing remains strong, and it’s generally less crowded than the previous few months.

🌦 November:
November usually brings the short rains, which are lighter and more sporadic than the long rains in April and May. It’s still a decent time for travel, with lower prices and fewer tourists. Landscapes start to green up again, and birdwatching is excellent.

🌤 December:
December marks the beginning of the short dry season. Rainfall decreases, and many areas are lush from the recent showers. It’s a popular month for holidays, especially toward the end of the month around Christmas and New Year. Wildlife viewing is good, and the southern Serengeti sees the return of the wildebeest herds.
